Following the Wild Bees: The Craft and Science of Bee Hunting by Thomas D. Seeley

More reading on those who are experts on something out of the mainstream.

Seeley tells stories of, and teaches how to hunt for bee hives.

When a bee is ‘full’ it flies straight back to the hive. It literally follows a beeline. By timing how long a bee takes to return, you can determine the approximate distance to the hive. With triangulation, patience and helpful weather you really can track down beehives.

Of course the above is oversimplified. Seeley takes us through the details. How to create syrup to attract bees. How to capture bees on flowers. How to contain them so that they find the syrup. How to methodically move around to zero in on the hive. And finally, how to scan trees so that you actually find the hive.

I’ve discovered that there is a Bee Garden in West Seattle. I’m going to check them out and see if they have any bee hunts.
